Members of the Geochang-gun Farmers' Association held a press conference on the 18th at the Geochang-gun Office briefing room, demanding a full investigation into real estate speculation by local public officials and elected council members.
The Farmers' Association stated, "Amid nationwide uproar over farmland speculation using insider information by LH employees, it is necessary to investigate whether the planning and execution of the large-scale national project related to the establishment of the Geochang Detention Center have been manipulated by speculative forces."
In particular, the Farmers' Association revealed, "Public official A purchased land for 120 million won by taking out a loan with high interest, and during the promotion of the Geochang Detention Center, sold it for 380 million won, generating a capital gain of 260 million won. At that time, the farmland was densely planted with pine trees, so compensation for obstacles would have been substantial."
They added, "The farmland was rice paddies, and it must be clarified under what plan public official A purchased the paddies and whether there were any preferential treatments during the process. We demand that a full-scale investigation into speculation conducted by the government also be carried out in Geochang-gun."
The Farmers' Association strongly urged, "Public officials and elected council members must fully disclose the details of farmland transactions that occurred during national projects and various development projects to ensure there is no suspicion. A thorough investigation must be conducted, and if any fraudulent methods are confirmed, those responsible must be held accountable."
