SKT, Anyang City & Ministry of the Interior Launch Disaster Response IoT Service "Building Smart City"
Citizen Safety, Health, and Disaster Pre-Management
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] SK Telecom announced on the 18th that it will introduce an Internet of Things (IoT) service using the disaster safety communication network in collaboration with Anyang City and the Disaster Safety Communication Network Management Division of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to protect the safety and health of citizens.
The disaster safety communication network is a network established to enable related agencies to communicate through a single communication network and respond quickly on-site in the event of a disaster. The nationwide network will be completed and operational starting this month.
This is the first time in Korea that a local government is introducing an IoT service utilizing the disaster safety communication network. SK Telecom expects this service to be a turning point for expanding the use of the disaster safety communication network.
Anyang City's smart city-based IoT service is provided in three main areas: ▲citizen safety ▲citizen health ▲disaster pre-management. First, to ensure citizens' safe living, IoT technology based on the disaster safety communication network has been applied to detect vibrations in structures and explosives. Aiming to improve citizens' health, the disaster network-based IoT service is also utilized for detecting fine dust and gases.
In addition, various services such as water leakage detection, smart traffic light control, and streetlight control will apply IoT services based on the disaster safety communication network. SK Telecom and Anyang City expect that these IoT services will help prevent and manage potential problems that may arise during disasters in advance.
Starting with this IoT service, SK Telecom plans to support the discovery and establishment of various solutions for building Anyang City's smart city by utilizing its diverse information and communication technologies (ICT). If other local governments pursue similar services, SK Telecom also plans to share technology and experience to contribute to the activation of the disaster safety communication network.
Jung Chang-kwon, Head of SK Telecom Infra Biz., said, "SK Telecom expects that providing IoT services that help citizens' safety, health, and convenience through the disaster safety communication network will accelerate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management," adding, "We will continue to support the construction of Anyang City's smart city with the company's advanced technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence (AI)."
Shim Jin-hong, Director of the Disaster Safety Communication Network Management Division at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, "We appreciate Anyang City's pioneering use of the disaster safety communication network and will provide various disaster safety application services so that it can function as a core infrastructure of the Digital New Deal."
