On the 17th, the 13th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court (Chief Judge Ho Seongho) held the first trial of A (44), who was arrested and indicted on charges of murder.
A, who recently underwent surgery to amputate her left leg and appeared in a wheelchair, admitted the charges during the trial and said, "I acknowledge the charges" and "I do not want a jury trial."
The prosecution explained the charges, stating, "Since June 2020, A had been separated from her cohabiting partner due to issues with her daughter's birth registration and financial problems. When she stopped receiving financial support, she decided to kill her daughter to take revenge."
A is accused of killing her daughter B (8) by covering her nose and mouth with a towel at a house in Michuhol-gu, Incheon, on January 8. She left the body unattended at home for a week, then called 119 reporting "the child is dead," and attempted suicide by gathering blankets and clothes on the bathroom floor and setting them on fire. However, she was rescued by the 119 emergency team and transferred to a nearby hospital, where she survived.
During police investigation, A testified that when C (46), her common-law partner, left the house, she felt betrayed and, after financial support was cut off, decided to kill B to take revenge.
A gave birth to B in 2013 while living with C, but since she had not divorced her ex-husband and had left home, B's birth was never registered. It was found that B did not attend daycare or school, and neither the education authorities nor local governments were aware of this fact.
B's biological father, C, was found dead in an apartment in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, after being questioned as a witness. It is reported that he left a message on his mobile phone saying, "I'm sorry I couldn't protect my family."
Meanwhile, the prosecutor in charge, feeling sympathy for B, who was recorded as "Nameless Girl" on the death certificate due to the lack of birth registration, persuaded A to register the birth on February 25. It is reported that B took the surname of A's legally still married ex-husband.
