View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] In response to the widespread controversy over performance bonuses and salary systems across the business sector, the heads of major companies have directly promised their employees to improve related systems and provide appropriate compensation. This is interpreted as the leaders actively stepping in to resolve the controversy out of concern for declining organizational morale.
On the afternoon of the 16th, Chung Euisun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, held an online town hall meeting with employees under the theme "The Future Story of Hyundai Motor Group" and announced plans to improve the performance bonus system.
Chairman Chung opened by saying, "I understand that there has been a lot of talk recently about performance rewards," and added, "I feel very sorry that employees who have worked hard feel they are not being respected in proportion to their contributions to the company."
He emphasized, "It is important to evaluate performance fairly and transparently and to reflect that in compensation and promotions," and added, "If there are problems, we must change them quickly to create an environment where employees can work with true conviction."
He continued, "Since we clearly recognize that there are issues, the CEOs of each company will make changes suitable to their realities within this year," and added, "I will also encourage this."
Chairman Chung’s direct remarks on the performance bonus controversy come amid growing disputes over bonuses throughout the business community. In January, when dissatisfaction over performance bonuses arose within SK Hynix, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won declared that he would return all of his salary received from SK Hynix last year.
Chairman Chey said, "I am well aware of the PS (Profit Sharing) issue and have given it considerable thought," and added, "I will return all the salary I received from SK Hynix last year to share it with the employees."
LG Electronics is also reportedly preparing to reform its compensation system after office workers dissatisfied with low wage increases and small performance bonuses recently formed a labor union. In addition, controversies over performance rewards continue at Samsung Electronics, Naver, and others.
There is also analysis that the IT industry triggered the performance bonus controversy. As major IT companies such as NCSoft, Woowa Brothers, and Coupang began offering unprecedented employee compensation this year, employees of traditional manufacturing-based companies were significantly influenced.
