[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] "A young man is standing on the bridge railing. It looks like he might fall at any moment!"
At around 11:35 PM on the 14th, a report call was received at the 112 Comprehensive Security Situation Room of Masan Jungbu Police Station in Gyeongnam.
The night duty detective team of Masan Jungbu Police Station, the local police at Shinmasan District Unit, and the Changwon Fire Headquarters rushed to Machang Bridge where the report was made.
Upon arrival at the scene, police and firefighters witnessed Mr. A (26), who was intoxicated and standing on the bridge railing. At that time, Mr. A did not allow the police and firefighters to come near him.
After more than an hour and a half of struggle, they tried to narrow the distance by saying to Mr. A, "We want to talk, but your voice is hard to hear, so please come just one step closer." When Mr. A’s tense voice cracked, they offered him water and attempted communication.
As time passed and Mr. A’s agitation subsided, they put a safety rope on him to prevent a fall accident.
While putting on the rope, to prevent resistance from Mr. A, the police comforted him by stroking his hands and saying, "You remind me of my son, so I’m worried about you."
Once safety was somewhat secured by the rope, firefighters removed part of the lower railing.
Fearing that Mr. A might feel embarrassed after being rescued, the police turned off all the flashing lights that brightly illuminated the scene and carefully guided Mr. A out from beyond the railing.
Mr. A safely returned to the ground at around 2:15 AM on the 15th, 2 hours and 40 minutes after the report was received.
After slipping through the cut railing, Mr. A was held in the arms of the police who helped rescue him and cried for a long time.
Afterwards, Mr. A returned safely to his family without serious injury.
Mr. A, who was intoxicated at the time of rescue, remained silent about the reason for his attempted extreme action.
