The March 15th Uprising is a historic event in democracy where, 61 years ago, students and citizens resisted rigged elections and the dictatorship regime, becoming the catalyst for the April 19th Revolution and laying the foundation of democracy in our country.
The commemoration ceremony was held under the theme "Embracing New Hope and Moving Forward" to honor the noble sacrifices of the March 15th Uprising contributors, inherit and develop the lofty spirit of freedom, democracy, and justice, and serve as an opportunity for national unity.
Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, Minister Hwang Ki-chul of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Changwon Mayor Heo Seong-mu, national merit recipients related to the March 15th Uprising, and their bereaved families attended the ceremony.
Before attending the ceremony, Mayor Heo Seong-mu of Changwon, together with Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, visited the site of the March 15th Uprising plaque and the symbolic space construction project to reflect on the historical significance of the origin site and the spirit of democracy.
Mayor Heo proposed to Prime Minister Chung in front of the March 15th Uprising origin site plaque the passage of a special law on the March 15th Uprising to restore honor and provide compensation to those involved in the uprising.
The March 15th Uprising origin site is where the democratization movement ignited in resistance to the dictatorship regime and rigged elections.
The city is promoting the creation of a symbolic space at the March 15th Uprising origin site to symbolize democratic history and provide a place for education and experience.
It is expected to open in July, establishing the identity of "Democratic Sanctuary Changwon" and restoring the legitimacy of South Korea’s democratization movement.
