Lee Jae-myung's 'Disaster Basic Income' Applied by 12.2 Million People in Just Over 40 Days
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The application rate for the second round of Gyeonggi-do's disaster basic income, which provides 100,000 KRW per Gyeonggi-do resident, has surpassed 90%. It has been about 40 days since the first of last month.
Gyeonggi-do announced on the 15th that as of 11 PM on the 14th of this month, the number of applicants for the second disaster basic income, which has been accepting applications online and offline since the first of last month, was counted at 12,232,556. This corresponds to 91.0% of the total population of 13,438,238 in the province.
In terms of payment methods, 8,189,085 people applied using credit or debit cards, which is four times more than the 2,045,370 applicants who applied using Gyeonggi local currency.
Online applications numbered 10,234,455, while offline applications were 1,998,101.
By city and county, Suwon-si had the highest number of applicants at 1,104,131. This was followed by Yongin-si with 984,331, Goyang-si with 961,042, and Seongnam-si with 832,638. The application rate compared to the eligible population was highest in Pocheon-si at 93.6%. This was followed by Suwon-si at 93.1%, Hwaseong-si at 92.8%, Yangju-si at 92.5%, and Osan-si at 92.4%.
To receive the second disaster basic income online, applicants must apply by 11 PM on the 31st of this month at the 2nd Gyeonggi-do Disaster Basic Income application website (basicincome.gg.go.kr).
The province has also been accepting on-site applications since the 1st of this month. Even after the online application period ends, disaster basic income can be applied for via on-site receipt until the 30th of next month. On weekdays, the hours are from 9 AM to 6 PM, and on Saturdays from 9 AM to 5 PM. Applications should be made at the administrative welfare centers in the applicant’s resident registration address’s eup, myeon, or dong. Saturdays will not be operated after the 29th of this month.
The usage period for the second disaster basic income is three months from the date of receiving the usage approval text message. However, for those who receive the usage approval text message after the 1st of next month, the usage deadline is June 30.
The disaster basic income can be used at businesses within the applicant’s resident registration city or county that accept Gyeonggi local currency and have annual sales of 1 billion KRW or less.

Payments can be made as usual using credit or debit cards, and if the merchant is affiliated with the local currency, the amount will be automatically deducted from the disaster basic income.
