Spring Days Did Not Come to the Weekend Box Office
Mobilization of 422,613 People Over Three Days Falls Short... Momentum of the Movie 'Minari' Waning
The weekend box office has yet to see the arrival of spring. The momentum of the movie 'Minari' has waned, drawing fewer than 500,000 viewers.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system, the number of moviegoers over the past weekend (12th?14th) was 422,613. This is 101,700 fewer than the first weekend of this month (5th?7th), which surpassed 500,000 viewers for the first time in over four months with 524,313 attendees. Daily attendance did not exceed the 200,000 mark. On the holidays, the 13th and 14th, the numbers were 177,161 and 165,608 respectively.
The decline of the box office leader 'Minari' is painful. It attracted only 130,345 viewers across 1,069 screens (11,183 showings). This is a 36.3% (74,353 viewers) decrease compared to the first weekend of this month’s 204,698 viewers. Despite receiving significant attention as an 'Oscar race' contender, its seat occupancy rate dropped from 10.9% to 7.2%. The cumulative audience count stands at 496,942.
'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train' drew 93,033 viewers from 677 screens (4,797 showings). It surpassed 'Raya and the Last Dragon,' which attracted 69,400 viewers from 897 screens (5,545 showings), to claim the second spot at the box office. Since the last weekend of last month (26th?28th), it has maintained a top position with a seat occupancy rate above 13%. Its cumulative audience is 1,197,921. 'Raya and the Last Dragon' saw a 38.3% (43,113 viewers) decrease compared to the first weekend of this month. Its cumulative audience is 220,214.
The new release 'Restart' ranked fourth with 22,529 viewers from 529 screens (3,047 showings). Following it were 'Soul' (22,207 viewers; cumulative 27,804), 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring' (18,887 viewers; cumulative 27,745), 'Mission Possible' (12,077 viewers; cumulative 434,392), and 'Chungking Express' (7,706 viewers; cumulative 51,993).
