[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the afternoon of the 11th, the Blue House held a meeting of the NSC Standing Committee chaired by Suh Hoon, Director of the National Security Office, and strongly condemned the violent suppression by the Myanmar military and police.
Participants on the day agreed to pay special attention to the safety of Korean residents and the protection of Korean companies operating in Myanmar, and to take practical measures step-by-step together with the international community to ensure that Myanmar's constitutional order is restored democratically and peacefully as soon as possible.
Taking advantage of the upcoming visit of the U.S. Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense scheduled for next week, the two sides decided to strengthen communication and cooperation on the Korea-U.S. relationship, regional and global cooperation through the Korea-U.S. Foreign and Defense Ministers' Meeting and the Korea-U.S. Foreign and Defense (2+2) Ministers' Meeting, and to concretize Korea-U.S. cooperation for the prompt establishment of a comprehensive North Korea strategy.
Regarding the recently concluded Korea-U.S. Special Measures Agreement (SMA) on defense cost-sharing, they reaffirmed the strong Korea-U.S. alliance, appropriately responded to the initial large increase demands, and evaluated the agreement on institutional improvements such as preventing the recurrence of unpaid leave for Korean workers. They also agreed to further strengthen the Korea-U.S. alliance relationship through the prompt implementation of the agreement.
