He also carries the painful memory of being called a "brain-damaged child." More than 20 years later, he has become a brain expert sought after by Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Barack Obama. Jim Kwik, author of Lasting Focus: The Power to Surpass Myself, created a learning method highly praised by the world's top 1%, based on his difficult childhood.
What changes did he undergo when even reading a single book was difficult? The clue emerged when he was hospitalized again due to another head injury. At that time, Kwik felt so miserable that he wished he were dead. However, inwardly he kept repeating, "There must be a better way." Then, the nurse in charge brought him tea in a mug printed with a photo of the legendary scientist Albert Einstein (1879?1955). Next to Einstein’s photo was a famous quote: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." At that moment, Kwik realized he was a slow learner. He resolved to devise a more efficient, effective, and enjoyable way to learn.
After discharge, Kwik began wrestling with books on neuroscience, self-development, multiple intelligences theory, and educational psychology. He finally realized that if knowledge is power, learning is a superpower, and he pondered how to learn and remember things faster.
Kwik developed the "Limitless Model," a means to upgrade the brain for faster learning. The model consists of three elements: Mindset (possibility), Motivation (purpose), and Method (procedure). Mindset refers to beliefs and attitudes about what we can do and what is possible. Motivation is summarized as the "why," the purpose behind actions and the energy needed to act in a certain way. Method is the specific process, followed by organized, logical, and systematic instructions.
The book also introduces the easy and fast "FASTER" technique. FASTER is an acronym for Forget, Act, State, Teach, Enter, Review. The main points are to forget everything except the learning content, act actively, and check your state. It also advises teaching what you have learned, recording it in a schedule, and reviewing it.
The author emphasizes that if you want to immerse yourself in what you desire, you must ask questions. Questions are the answers themselves, but often people do not ask enough, which lowers concentration, understanding, and memory. He advises reading or studying while asking key questions such as how to apply what you have learned, why you should apply it, and when to apply it, which can surely produce results. The author also introduces concrete and direct methods to improve memory. At the end, there is a 10-day plan for implementation. If you are determined to try Kwik’s learning method yourself, it is worth attempting.
"Inside each of us is a superhero, and Kwik Learning teaches how to unleash that superhero’s superpower." This is a recommendation from the late Stan Lee, former honorary chairman of Marvel. While learning methods are very important, Kwik emphasizes that the moment you overcome the mental limits of thinking "I can’t," your inner potential is elevated.
