Assemblyman Lee Gae-ho Urges Inclusion of 'Gunsan-Mokpo West Coast Railway' in National Rail Network
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] National Assembly member Lee Gae-ho (Democratic Party, Damyang·Hampyeong·Yeonggwang·Jangseong) strongly urged the inclusion of the ‘West Coast Railroad’ connecting Gunsan and Mokpo in the 4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.
On the morning of the 10th, Lee attended the ‘4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan Party-Government Meeting’ held at the National Assembly as the standing vice-chairman of the Party’s Balanced Development Special Committee, stating, “The government is promoting the establishment of a U-shaped circular transportation network, but the West Coast Railroad between Gunsan and Mokpo is conspicuously missing from this plan.”
Regarding the metropolitan railroads in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions, he emphasized, “Proposals for the southern region such as Gwangju?Naju and Gwangju?Hwasun have been reflected, but we need to additionally include metropolitan railroads in the northern region such as Gwangju?Jangseong and Gwangju?Damyang to establish a metropolitan railroad circular network centered on Gwangju covering Gwangju and Jeonnam.”
After the meeting, Lee separately met with Kim Junsung, mayor of Yeonggwang County, and Son Myungsoo, 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, to reiterate the request for the inclusion of the ‘West Coast Railroad’ in the 4th National Railroad Network Plan and additionally proposed local Ministry of Land projects.
At this meeting, he requested the inclusion of the Damyang National Road No. 29 (Damyang?Yongmyeon) improvement project, the expansion and paving of Local Road No. 60 (Goseo?Daedeok), and the four-lane expansion of Jangseong Local Road No. 49 (Donghwa?Seosam) in the ‘5th National Road and Local Road Five-Year Plan’ and next year’s budget. He also proposed the stop of the Honam KTX at Hampyeong Station, a long-standing project of Hampyeong County.

2nd Vice Minister Son Myungsoo stated, “I fully agree with the necessity of the West Coast Railroad,” and added, “We are positively reviewing the requested road projects including Damyang National Road No. 29, Local Road No. 60, and Jangseong Local Road No. 49, and will actively promote them.”
