Renault Samsung XM3 Achieves Top Safety Rating of 5 Stars in European Crash Test
Following the 2020 KNCAP 1st Grade Achievement, Safety Proven in Europe as Well
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] The Renault Samsung Motors' sports utility vehicle (SUV) 'New Renault Arkana (XM3)', set to launch in the European market this year, has received the highest safety rating in European crash tests.
Renault Samsung announced on the 4th that its New Renault Arkana earned the highest rating of five stars in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), a new car safety evaluation in Europe. This follows its achievement of a first-grade rating in the 2020 Korea New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP).
The New Renault Arkana achieved five stars in Euro NCAP with scores of 96% (36.8 points) for adult occupant protection, 83% (41 points) for child occupant protection, 75% (36.1 points) for pedestrian protection, and 74% (9.6 points) for safety assist features, ranking it at the highest safety level.
The XM3, built on the new CMF-B platform with a reinforced engine bay structure, secured excellent crash safety, according to the company. The engine bay structure of the XM3 minimizes deformation of the engine compartment during frontal collisions while effectively absorbing impact energy. Additionally, high-strength steel was applied to the cabin structure to minimize deformation of the occupant space during crashes, enhancing safety, and the B-pillar was reinforced to prepare for side impacts.
Furthermore, passenger-responsive front airbags, thorax-protecting side airbags, curtain airbags, as well as belt pretensioners that tighten seat belts to prevent occupants from moving forward upon impact, and headrests designed to prevent neck injuries, were applied to the driver’s seat, front passenger seat, and both rear side window seats.
The XM3 also optimized the position and structure of the hood, front bumper, headlamps, and lower windshield to minimize impact on pedestrians in emergencies. It is equipped with an automatic emergency braking system (AEB) capable of recognizing sudden situations involving not only pedestrians but also bicycle riders.

Meanwhile, the XM3, developed under Renault Group’s global project led by Renault Samsung’s Central Research Institute (RTK), was born under a new concept that satisfies both the proportions of a traditional SUV and the comfort of a sedan. In the domestic market, it is sold with two gasoline engine lineups: the high-performance TCe 260, featuring a new engine co-developed with Daimler, and the economical 1.6 GTe.
