Armenia Suffers Crushing Defeat in Azerbaijan Amid Prime Minister-Military Conflict and Political Instability
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Armenia, defeated in the war against Azerbaijan over 'Nagorno-Karabakh,' is suffering from political instability. The military is demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister, who is the head of the cabinet, and the Prime Minister has labeled the military's backlash as a coup, continuing the political turmoil.
According to foreign media on the 24th (local time), after Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan dismissed the Chief of the Joint Staff, the military leadership issued a statement demanding Pashinyan's resignation in protest.
As the military held the Prime Minister responsible for the defeat and demanded his resignation, Pashinyan notified the dismissal of Onik Gasparyan, the Chief of the Joint Staff. Pashinyan urged the military to comply with his orders and also called for protests by his supporters.
Since signing a humiliating peace agreement on November 10 last year, Armenia has been engaged in a blame game over the responsibility for the defeat. Initially, Armenia had defeated Azerbaijani forces in the 1992-1994 war and occupied 'Nagorno-Karabakh,' where ethnic Armenians were the majority. However, after this recent war, key areas were handed over to Azerbaijan.
