Campaign to Achieve Zero Wildfires by Burning in Fire-Prone Villages
[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 24th, Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it will operate the Spring Wildfire Prevention Headquarters and enter an emergency duty system until May 15.
To this end, wildfire prevention headquarters were established in 12 towns and townships centered on the county.
Sixty wildfire prevention and firefighting specialists were intensively deployed in vulnerable areas such as park cemeteries, mountain entry control zones, and illegal burning sites, and one leased helicopter is being mobilized to prevent wildfires from the air and on the ground.
The county has set the period from the 22nd of last month to the 19th of next month as an intensive crackdown period on unauthorized burning, aiming for zero wildfire caused by burning, and plans to conduct focused crackdowns.
Accordingly, starting from Sugok Village, Yongsu-ri, Changpyeong-myeon on the 24th, a joint campaign with Jeollanam-do was conducted, and publicity began for each of the 12 towns and townships.
Wildfires caused by accidents can be punished by imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won. Also, a fine of 300,000 won is imposed if a fire is lit in forest-adjacent areas.
The county is actively promoting through village broadcasts and village chief meetings to prevent disadvantages caused by unauthorized burning.
Three hundred twelve village representatives in the jurisdiction participated in the ‘Green Village Campaign Without Burning Wildfires’ to voluntarily eradicate illegal burning and submitted pledges to prohibit burning, and village residents are also participating.

A county official said, “Seventy percent of wildfires in the past five years were caused by unauthorized burning,” adding, “Especially this year, through campaigns and others, we expect to lead autonomous prevention through village communities in addition to the existing crackdown-oriented wildfire prevention.”
