According to the Gwangju Western Fire Station on the 22nd, at around 11:42 a.m., an imported SUV exploded while driving on a road near Yangdong Market in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City.
The explosion was reportedly heard even 1 km away in a straight line from the accident site.
Along with the explosion, the stopped vehicle caught fire and emitted smoke. Nearby merchants immediately grabbed fire extinguishers from their shops and rushed to the scene.
As if prearranged, the merchants extinguished the fire on the vehicle and managed traffic around the area. They also checked if the driver, Mr. A (37), was okay.
The fire department official explained that by actively cooperating with the 119 emergency responders who arrived shortly after, they were able to prevent a larger disaster.
Mr. A, who suffered burns on his arm, was transported to the hospital by the 119 ambulance and is reported to be in stable condition.
It was confirmed that Mr. A was carrying about ten portable butane gas canisters used for interior work in his vehicle.
Based on Mr. A's statement that the explosion occurred immediately after lighting a lighter to smoke a cigarette, it is presumed that leaking butane gas caused the accident.
