Korea's Best 'Deni Taegukgi' Unveiled on Samiljeol
National Museum of Korea to Specially Open the Korean Empire Exhibition Room from the 23rd
On the occasion of the 102nd anniversary of Samiljeol, the National Museum of Korea announced on the 22nd that it will specially exhibit the oldest Taegukgi (Korean national flag) in the country. It is the 'Denny Taegukgi,' Registered Cultural Heritage No. 382. It will be displayed in the permanent exhibition hall, the Korean Empire Room, from the 23rd of this month until the 8th of next month.
The Denny Taegukgi was bestowed by Owen Denny (1838?1900), an American who served as a diplomatic advisor to King Gojong of Joseon, when he returned to the United States in 1890. Denny became a diplomatic advisor in 1886 upon the recommendation of Li Hongzhang (1823?1901) of Qing China, but was dismissed in 1890 after criticizing Qing interference and asserting Joseon's status as a sovereign independent nation.

The flag received at that time measures 263 cm in width and 180 cm in height. It is made by sewing red and blue fabric cutouts onto two pieces of white cotton cloth joined together. The shape and arrangement of the four trigrams are the same as the current Taegukgi, but the color is blue instead of black. William Ralston, a descendant of Denny, donated this Taegukgi to Korea in 1981.
