[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] On the 20th, 19 additional COVID-19 cases related to a plastic manufacturing factory in Namyangju-si, Gyeonggi Province were confirmed.
According to the Namyangju City quarantine authorities, the confirmed cases related to the plastic manufacturing factory on that day included 129 employees of the company (120 foreigners), 22 family members, acquaintances, and employees from other factories, bringing the total confirmed cases to 151.
The quarantine authorities stated, "Some confirmed cases from other regions epidemiologically linked to the factory's infected employees were not included in the count, so the total number of confirmed cases may increase."
Most of the confirmed cases at the factory are foreign workers from 17 countries, who were found to have lived together in dormitories with 1 to 5-person rooms on the third floor of the factory.
Previously, one Cambodian employee of the company tested positive at Soonchunhyang University Seoul Hospital on the 13th, and as of this day, 151 people have tested positive.
In the epidemiological investigation by the quarantine authorities, a significant number of confirmed cases, including foreign workers, were found to have been active outside the factory during the Lunar New Year holiday period and were not under any control until they underwent diagnostic testing.
Meanwhile, starting from this day, the city began proactive testing targeting dormitory workers of local companies.
The city judged that COVID-19 spread centered around the enclosed factory dormitories and is conducting proactive mass testing of all dormitory users in companies, regardless of nationality.
