[Golf Topic] 'Back Surgery' Woods "Will Not Participate in WGC Workday Championship"
[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] ○…‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods (USA, photo) will not participate in this year’s first World Golf Championships (WGC) series.
On the 20th (Korean time), the US Golf Channel reported, "Woods is not on the player list for the Workday Championship (total prize money $10.5 million)," adding, "It was somewhat expected as he underwent back surgery last month." Woods revealed that he had back surgery at the end of January. Although he qualified for this tournament, which grants entry to players ranked up to 50th in the world (he is ranked 48th), he chose to rest as expected. It has been three months since he last appeared in an official tournament after the Masters in November last year.

The tournament will be held over four days starting on the 26th at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, USA. Until last year, it was held as the Mexico Championship, but the tournament name changed as Workday, a financial management software company, became the title sponsor. The WGC series has a total prize money exceeding $10 million (approximately 11.04 billion KRW) and is classified as the tier just below the four major championships. The Players Championship, known as the ‘5th Major,’ is similar in scale to the WGC series.
