Seoul City Exhibits 6 Cases of Underpass Utilization Including Seongdong-gu Oksu Overpass
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 19th that it will hold an exhibition showcasing cases of utilizing six underpass spaces beneath overpasses, including the Oksoo Overpass in Seongdong-gu, as rest, cultural, and sports spaces until April.
The project to utilize underpass spaces began in April 2018 with the opening of Darak Oksoo, an "eco-friendly indoor cultural space" under the Oksoo Overpass in Seongdong-gu, marking the start of providing citizens with underpass spaces. This was followed by the creation of five public underpass spaces: an "open space for outdoor rest, culture, play, and sports" under the Imun Overpass in Dongdaemun-gu; a "citizen complex cultural space centered on community sports" under the Jongam Intersection Overpass in Seongbuk-gu; an "open citizen space themed on rest" under the Hannam 1 Overpass in Yongsan-gu; and a "citizen complex cultural space centered on a smart library" under the Geumcheon Overpass in Geumcheon-gu. The project to improve the design of public facilities and the aging landscape under the Nowon Station Overpass in Nowon-gu is in its final stages and is expected to be completed within the year.
To introduce these six public underpass spaces, Seoul will exhibit records of the projects carried out over the past five years, including planning and design processes, creation, and operational achievements, at Gallery 3 on the third basement floor of the Seoul Urban Architecture Exhibition Hall until April 25, for two months.
The exhibition space is arranged with architect explanation videos, facility-specific blueprints, overall models, program operation status, and photos showing the transformed spaces to help citizens easily understand the newly changed six underpass spaces. Additionally, in a separately partitioned exhibition area, visitors can watch interview videos that reveal how local residents felt and thought about the changes before and after the underpass transformations.
