Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Noh Hyun-song) is taking a step forward in educational innovation through the ‘2021 Gangseo Innovation Education District’ project.

The district office and Gangseo Yangcheon Office of Education announced that they will invest a budget of 1.5 billion KRW this year to promote a total of 30 projects in four areas: ▲ Expansion and maturation of public-private-academic governance ▲ Operation of school curricula in cooperation with the community ▲ Strengthening support systems for community education activities ▲ Support for youth autonomous activities.

The ‘Innovation Education District’ is a project where schools and local communities cooperate to realize a community education ecosystem so that children and adolescents can grow up happily.

First, the district will form subcommittees and project promotion teams to build a public-private-academic governance network. The subcommittees include the Community Education Ecosystem Subcommittee, Parents Subcommittee, Youth Support Subcommittee, and Teachers Subcommittee. They hold regular meetings at least once a month to gather opinions on the Innovation Education District and seek directions for educational development through communication among educational stakeholders.

The community also plays the role of school teachers. By linking various human and material resources of the community to school education, a quality educational environment is created. Experiential education developed directly by the community, such as ‘Visiting Creative Experience School’ and ‘Visiting Career Special Lecture: My Life is JOB-GO,’ is provided to students.

To solve educational problems appearing in reality, the community sometimes becomes the school. This is to address after-school care gaps and educational disparities caused by remote classes. To this end, projects such as the ‘Customized Growth Support for One Child’ and ‘Platform Construction Project to Activate Community After-School Programs’ are promoted, providing career education as well as learning and emotional support for vulnerable youth.

In addition, various supports are provided for youth-led autonomous activities, and a new ‘Youth Support Subcommittee’ is established to help youth fully play their role as a pillar of the Innovation Education District.

A district official said, “Even under the COVID-19 situation last year, the innovation education project played a significant role in filling the care gap for children and supporting emotional stability,” adding, “We will continue to actively discover after-school resources and expand the connection between education and the community so that children can continuously pursue their dreams of learning within the community.”

Meanwhile, the district is recruiting ‘Gangseo Innovation Education District Subcommittee Members’ until the 24th.
