The estimated cost for damage recovery is expected to reach over 4.6 billion won. The damage to crops rapidly increased due to the cold wave that lasted from the 5th to the 10th of last month, followed by sudden temperature changes and frequent rainfall.
In particular, damage to winter cabbage scheduled for shipment reached 1,700 hectares, with 18 hectares of the winter specialty Sebalnamul, and 75 hectares of general crops such as potatoes and barley sprouts also affected.
Winter cabbage, which accounts for about 70% (2,507 hectares) of the national production and is managed by Haenam-gun, showed significant decline in marketability as the root growth points repeatedly froze and thawed due to the cold wave and frequent rainfall, causing rot and softening.
Farmers affected will receive direct support such as pesticide cost assistance and indirect support including postponement of agricultural management fund repayments, depending on the scale and extent of the damage. The pesticide cost support rate is 2.5 million won per hectare for vegetables and 1 million won per hectare for general crops.
In this regard, County Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan visited the damage sites in Hwangsan-myeon and Sanim-myeon, the main cabbage production areas, on the 10th, and promised prompt support to minimize farmers' losses.
Governor Myeong said, “Following the decrease in kimchi consumption due to COVID-19, the cold wave has further reduced the marketability of cabbage, worsening the difficulties faced by cabbage farmers. We will promptly establish a recovery fund support plan to help stabilize the management of affected farms as much as possible, and we will also do our best to prevent agricultural disasters such as heavy rains and typhoons in the future.”
