Timon "Thanks to Honseoljok? Sports and Hobby Product Sales Surge 117%"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] TMON announced on the 16th that sales of sports and hobby products more than doubled compared to last year during the Lunar New Year holiday period. This is interpreted as an increase in consumers spending the holiday at home engaging in hobbies.
In a press release on the same day, TMON stated, "Sales of sports and hobby-related products saw a significant increase during this Lunar New Year holiday period," adding, "Sales in this category grew by 117% compared to last year, showing remarkable growth."
The products were related to hobbies that can be enjoyed relatively safely despite COVID-19, such as golf (536%), gardening and horticulture (371%), musical instruments (72%), and car washing and maintenance supplies (57%).
This is analyzed as a result of increased consumption on hobbies during the extra free time mainly among the 'Gwipojok' who gave up returning to their hometowns and the 'Honsoljok' who spend the Lunar New Year alone.
According to a survey conducted by TMON last month, more than 85% of the 1,043 respondents planned to spend the holiday at home, either resting with family or enjoying content at home.
With social distancing continuing during this Lunar New Year holiday and a general atmosphere of refraining from visiting hometowns or traveling, customers mostly stayed at home and invested in hobbies.

Lee Jin-won, CEO of TMON, said, "As the non-face-to-face holiday continues this Lunar New Year, the demand for enjoying hobbies while staying at home seems to have increased," adding, "TMON's various special price stores and events running 24 hours a day were able to create a synergy effect in line with this demand."
