Yeongdeungpo-gu Mayor Cha Hyeon-il Visits 18 Neighborhoods for On-Site Communication with Residents: What’s Next?
Seeking Solutions by Visiting Civil Complaint Sites and Long-Standing Project Areas Reflecting Residents' Opinions... Listening to Local Residents and Merchants to Understand the Reality of Yeongdeungpo-gu Residents
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “Mr. District Mayor, there are too many people throwing cigarette butts in front of our store, which is greatly hindering our business. Is there any good solution?”
Unable to ignore the heartfelt plea of a resident living in Daerim-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, District Mayor Chae Hyun-il visited the store to meet the complainant and listen to their story.
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) has taken steps toward a livable and open neighborhood by planning the ‘District Mayor’s On-site Sketch’ to inspect the 18 neighborhoods of Yeongdeungpo at the start of the new year.
This ‘District Mayor’s On-site Sketch’ was organized with the purpose of getting closer to the image of the district desired by residents by directly visiting major issue sites and complaint locations in each neighborhood, which were received through various channels including online communication with residents, and checking the measures taken.
Accordingly, District Mayor Chae Hyun-il visited all 18 neighborhoods over two weeks from January 22 to February 5. The number of people visiting the sites was kept to a minimum in compliance with the ban on gatherings of five or more people due to COVID-19 response measures.
Mayor Chae encouraged frontline employees by visiting neighborhood community centers and, together with relevant departments, visited major project sites to check progress and review any issues, conducting thorough inspections to ensure efficient project completion.
Mayor Chae also made sure not to forget to visit shopping districts, residential alleys, and parks to listen to residents’ difficulties and opinions firsthand.
In addition, he visited shopping areas that suffered sales declines due to COVID-19, listened to residents’ hardships, empathized with them, and pondered over effective support measures.
As a result of the two-week site visits, about 50 issues and complaints were identified across the 18 neighborhoods. Most of the requests were related to improving the residential environment, such as ▲sidewalk maintenance ▲green space creation ▲garbage collection ▲facility maintenance. These issues have been forwarded to the respective departments for prompt review and action.
District Mayor Chae Hyun-il said, “The time spent communicating with residents on-site will be one of the steps toward building a new Yeongdeungpo-gu we want to create,” and added, “We will do our best to prepare active support measures in the future, reflecting the hearts of residents who have suffered many difficulties due to COVID-19.”
