Im Jong-seok "Basic Income, a Question of Fairness and Justice in Our Reality"
Im Jong-seok, Former Chief of Staff at Cheong Wa Dae, Shares Basic Income Views on SNS... Proposes 'Constructive Debate' to Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] "I still cannot shake off the question of whether the idea of basic income is fair and just in our current reality." Former Blue House Chief of Staff Lim Jong-seok said this in a post on Facebook on the 8th.
Former Chief Lim stated, "Social polarization has continuously and sharply expanded over the past 30 years. This trend will only grow further in the market," adding, "How should limited resources be used in a way that does not pass the burden onto future generations while being more fair?" This reflects the significance of the debate over Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung's 'basic income' policy.
Former Chief Lim explained, "Basic income literally means 'providing all citizens with a monthly living allowance sufficient to live above the poverty line unconditionally,'" and pointed out, "To provide the 500,000 won per month that Governor Lee proposes as a mid-to-long-term goal, approximately 317 trillion won in budget is required. Even though 500,000 won per month is still ridiculously insufficient for living expenses, an enormous scale of tax increase is already necessary."
Regarding the debate between Governor Lee and Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon, Former Chief Lim also offered support from the perspective of Leader Lee. He noted, "(Governor Lee) was very angry at Leader Lee Nak-yeon's criticism."
Former Chief Lim said, "He is, after all, the leader of the Democratic Party to which we belong. The counterattack calling it a 'colonial inferiority complex' sounds less like criticism and more like condemnation. Leaders need not only philosophy and vision but sometimes words and attitude are much more important."
