'Stealth' Crackdown on Drunk, Reckless, and Retaliatory Driving... Expanded to General Roads
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] The Gangwon Provincial Police Agency is expanding the deployment of unmarked patrol cars, which were primarily operated on highways, to general roads as well.
According to the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency on the 8th, violations and risky behaviors such as ▲reckless and retaliatory driving ▲two-wheeler traffic law violations ▲overloaded or poorly maintained freight vehicles continue on general roads, which account for over 90% of fatal accidents (based on 2020 data). They plan to use high-performance unmarked patrol cars to crack down mainly on high-risk violations.
In particular, on all roads within Gangwon Province, they will focus on cracking down on drunk driving, which causes public outrage and traffic accidents, as well as reckless and retaliatory driving (such as sudden lane changes and abrupt braking) and speeding.
Previously, in September 2019, the Gangwon Police operated unmarked patrol cars on a trial basis on national and local roads in the Yeongwol and Jeongseon areas, cracking down on over 30 cases of reckless and speeding driving in just one day. By the end of that year, the traffic fatality count in Yeongwol and Jeongseon was only one, demonstrating the preventive effect of the patrol cars.
Since the first introduction of unmarked patrol cars in July 2016, their effectiveness compared to regular patrol cars has been proven with ▲290 times more reckless driving violations caught ▲2.4 times more violations for driving on the shoulder ▲2.1 times more violations for exclusive lanes.
