Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Selects "Jeongbo Yeoga Hyeonsang" as Korean Term to Replace "Filter Bubble"
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dong-hyun] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language announced on the 1st that they have selected ‘정보 여과 현상’ (information filtering phenomenon) as an easy Korean alternative to the term ‘filter bubble.’
Filter bubble refers to the phenomenon where internet information providers analyze an individual's tastes or preferences and selectively provide appropriate information, resulting in users receiving only filtered information. This can be problematic if users are exposed only to biased information or articles with specific tendencies due to the filter bubble.
As part of the ‘Using Easy Korean Words Project,’ the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, together with the National Institute of the Korean Language, has established and operates a system to provide alternative Korean terms for foreign words. Based on opinions proposed during the Saemal Meeting held from the 22nd to the 24th of last month, the Ministry and the Institute thoroughly reviewed the appropriateness and usability of meanings and selected 정보 여과 현상 as the alternative term for filter bubble.
Regarding this, the Ministry conducted a ‘Public Acceptance Survey on Korean Alternatives for Difficult Foreign Words’ targeting about 1,000 citizens from the 25th to the 27th of last month. The results showed that 75.6% of respondents agreed that it is good to replace ‘filter bubble’ with an easy Korean term. Furthermore, 91.1% of respondents found it appropriate to change filter bubble to 정보 여과 현상.
