The atmosphere is shifting from an "old-man sport" to a "young-man sport." The PGA Tour, where top-level golfers compete, is no exception. Young players under 25, such as Im Sung-jae (23, CJ Logistics) and Viktor Hovland (24, Norway), are rapidly rising. Charles Howell III (42, USA), a 20-year veteran of the PGA Tour, offered advice to the younger generation. He is a diligent golfer who has secured his tour card with three career wins.
First, be grateful. Howell III recalled, "I remember when I first entered the PGA Tour in 2000," adding, "I wrote handwritten letters to tournament directors and sponsors to express my gratitude for the opportunity to participate in golf tournaments." The PGA Tour faced the variable of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, experiencing setbacks including the cancellation of majors like The Open.
With tournaments postponed, the prestigious Masters was held only in November. The schedule was disrupted, and to prevent the spread of COVID-19, events were held without spectators. From the players' perspective, holding tournaments was more urgent than ever. They were plagued by fears that "their jobs might disappear." They came to appreciate the importance of tournament officials even more. Howell III advises young players to "play as much as possible."
