Cosmetics Industry Joins Forces to Solve Plastic Problem... Declaration of the 'Cosmetics Plastic Initiative'
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] The cosmetics industry has joined hands to solve the problem of plastic recycling.
The Korea Cosmetic Association, L'Or?al Korea, Amorepacific, Aekyung Industrial, and LG Household & Health Care announced on the 27th the declaration of the ‘2030 Cosmetics Plastic Initiative’ to address the issue of plastic packaging in cosmetics and realize a sustainable circular economy.
Companies participating in the ‘2030 Cosmetics Plastic Initiative’ will implement 10 action plans based on the slogan 'Beautiful us, Beautiful earth' with four key goals: ▲100% elimination of products difficult to recycle ▲30% reduction in petroleum-based plastic use ▲activation of refills ▲self-collection of sold containers.
Seoul YWCA, the Resource Circulation Social Economy Institute, and the Resource Circulation Social Solidarity, which are part of the initiative, will actively participate in the implementation process by managing the initiative’s outcomes and discussing directions, providing suggestions and monitoring results to solve the problem of plastic packaging in cosmetics and promote a sustainable circular economy.
Starting with this declaration, the ‘2030 Cosmetics Plastic Initiative’ plans to form and operate a stakeholder consultative body involving the cosmetics industry, civic groups, government, and related organizations to manage outcomes and discuss implementation plans, transparently disclosing annual performance to continuously develop the initiative.

Seokyung Bae, Chairman of the Korea Cosmetic Association, said, “This declaration will serve as an opportunity to consolidate the industry’s concerns for reducing plastic packaging use and realizing a sustainable circular economy,” adding, “The Korea Cosmetic Association will explain and encourage the necessity of efforts toward resource circulation so that more cosmetics companies can participate in the initiative.”
