Samsung Electro-Mechanics Develops Ultra-Slim 3-Terminal MLCC... Supplies to 5G Phone Manufacturers
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on the 20th that it has succeeded in developing an ultra-slim 3-terminal multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) and has started supplying it to global smartphone companies.
The 3-terminal MLCC developed by Samsung Electro-Mechanics has a 1209 size (1.2mm*0.9mm) and a thickness reduced to 0.65mm, which is 18% thinner compared to the existing 0.8mm, increasing the design freedom of smartphones. Samsung Electro-Mechanics explained that it succeeded in developing the ultra-slim 3-terminal MLCC by applying its proprietary thin-layer molding technology and ultra-precision stacking technology.
Recently, as smartphones have become multifunctional and high-performance with 5G mobile communication and multi-cameras, the number of components mounted has increased, while the size remains at a certain level, increasing the demand for small and slim components.
In particular, due to the fast processing speed characteristic of 5G smartphones, high-frequency noise occurs in the AP (Application Processor) power supply section, and the 3-terminal MLCC efficiently removes this noise. One 3-terminal MLCC can replace 3 to 4 general MLCCs, which is also advantageous for securing component mounting space.
Kim Doo-young, Vice President and Head of the Component Business Division at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, said, "With the commercialization of 5G mobile communication and the electrification of automobiles, the demand for ultra-small, high-performance, and high-reliability MLCCs is increasing significantly. We will secure a leading position in the market by strengthening differentiated technological capabilities and production capacity, such as developing core raw materials in-house and internalizing equipment."
