Chungnam Supports Flower Farms with 'One-Table, One-Flower' Initiative
[Asia Economy (Hongseong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province is launching a campaign to revitalize the consumption of flowers to support flower farmers suffering from a decline in flower consumption.
According to the province on the 18th, the auction prices at the aT Flower Auction Market for flowers produced locally, such as chrysanthemums and freesias, have dropped by 20% to 50% compared to last year.
By variety, the average price of chrysanthemum pods fell 21% from 2,719 KRW per bundle (10 stems) in the second week of January last year to 2,145 KRW in the second week of this month.
During the same period, the price of the Borami variety dropped from 3,504 KRW to 1,901 KRW, falling to about half the previous trading price.
Freesias also failed to avoid weakness. The Soleil variety fell from 3,437 KRW last year to 2,112 KRW this year (39%), and the Yellow variety dropped from 2,645 KRW to 1,885 KRW (29%).
Fortunately, local flowers have not reached the point of being discarded due to failed auctions. However, with the likelihood of events such as graduation and entrance ceremonies being held online, the province expects it will be difficult to anticipate a seasonal boom in February and March this year.
Accordingly, the province plans to ease the difficulties of local flower farmers through its own flower consumption promotion campaign.
They will start initiatives such as ‘One Table One Flower’ within the provincial office and gifting flower baskets to employees on their birthdays to activate flower consumption in daily life.
Along with offline consumption promotion campaigns, the province will also support new market development, including helping local flower farmers enter online shopping malls.
Additionally, 1.7 billion KRW will be invested in strengthening the competitiveness of flower production infrastructure, and 389 million KRW will be allocated to fostering new export strategy flower items.
Meanwhile, as of last year, Chungnam had 506 flower farms (covering 373 hectares) producing a total of 75,568,000 flower stems.
