Operation of Safety Counseling Room at Gangdong-gu Family Counseling Center... Counseling on Domestic Violence and More
Weekdays 10 AM to 5 PM Support for Victim Protection, Counseling, Treatment, and Correction Programs
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) is effectively operating the ‘Gangdong-gu Family Counseling Center (4, Yangjaedaero 138-gil, Gangdong-gu, 2nd floor)’ to serve as a healing remedy for those in need of family counseling.
Since its establishment in 2018 with its own budget, the center has faithfully carried out over 1,300 counseling sessions annually, as well as protecting victims of domestic violence, guiding them to shelters, and providing temporary protection.
To accommodate residents reluctant to have face-to-face contact due to COVID-19, safety facilities have been installed and operated within the counseling rooms. The center also offers treatment programs for both victims and perpetrators, as well as domestic violence prevention education programs.
The center operates from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and any resident in need can use the services free of charge.
Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General, expressed concern in a statement in April 2020, saying, “Many women are exposed to threats in their homes, which should be the safest place, and domestic violence is increasing due to growing economic and social pressures and fear.”
Additionally, according to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family’s ‘Domestic Violence Survey Research,’ only 1.0% of respondents who experienced violence sought help from those around them regarding the violent behavior, indicating a very low rate.
