Choi Seung-jae "Triple hardships for farmers due to COVID-19... Raise the gift limit under the Anti-Graft Act to 200,000 won"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Choi Seung-jae, a member of the People Power Party, proposed raising the gift limit under the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act from the current 100,000 won to 200,000 won ahead of the Lunar New Year, citing that farmers are suffering double and triple hardships due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, floods, and heavy rains.
On the 13th, Choi said on Facebook, "The warmth that the Lunar New Year holiday usually brings is nowhere to be found due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation."
He added, "There was a measure to raise the gift limit during last Chuseok, and as a result, the total volume increased by almost 7%, showing a very positive signal," and proposed raising the gift limit restricted by the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act during the Lunar New Year to around 200,000 won. Last year, the government temporarily raised the gift limit to 200,000 won about a month before Chuseok, which had the effect of increasing farmers' sales.
Choi stated, "I urge the government to make a prompt decision to minimize the damage to the already struggling agriculture, fisheries, and livestock sectors."
