Former Lawmaker Min Kyung-wook Investigated by Police Over Liberation Day Rally... Refuses to Testify
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Former Future United Party (now People Power Party) lawmaker Min Kyung-wook, who was accused of hosting a rally on Liberation Day last year, was investigated by the police.
Seoul Jongno Police Station announced on the 11th that they investigated former lawmaker Min on charges of violating the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act and the Assembly and Demonstration Act. Min was questioned for about an hour and a half starting at 10:30 a.m. that day, and it is known that he mostly refused to give statements.
Earlier, on Liberation Day last year, Min, who led the '4·15 Fraud Election National Struggle Headquarters (Guktubon),' organized a rally in downtown Seoul attended by thousands of people.
At that time, Seoul City designated downtown areas such as Jongno-gu and Jung-gu as rally prohibition zones due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). In addition, all rallies reported by about 30 conservative groups at Gwanghwamun Square and Euljiro were banned. The conservative groups filed administrative lawsuits, and the court suspended the effect of the rally prohibition administrative order only for the Guktubon rally near Euljiro Entrance Station with about 3,000 participants and the Ilpamanpa rally in front of Donghwa Duty-Free Shop with about 100 participants.

However, on Liberation Day, more than 10,000 people gathered in the downtown area, and the rally prohibition zones and restrictions imposed by the court were not observed. As a result, Park Joo-min of the Democratic Party and others filed a complaint against former lawmaker Min for violating the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act and the Assembly and Demonstration Act.
