[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] Major business organizations visited Joo Ho-young, the floor leader of the People Power Party, to appeal for supplementary legislation on the Serious Accidents Punishment Act (Serious Accidents Act).
On the 11th, the heads of five economic organizations, including the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business (Chairman Kim Ki-moon) and the Korea Employers Federation, met with Floor Leader Joo and demanded supplementary legislation, stating that the Serious Accidents Act passed on the 8th did not reflect a single suggestion from the business community. They also requested attention to expanding government support along with the supplementary legislation.
During the meeting with Floor Leader Joo, the business community requested ▲ changing the lower limit of imprisonment for business owners to an upper limit, ▲ applying the Serious Accidents Act only in cases of repeated deaths, ▲ specifying business owners’ obligations and establishing exemption from punishment if obligations are fulfilled, and ▲ granting a minimum two-year grace period to small and medium enterprises with 50 or more employees.
