Trump's Eldest Daughter Ivanka Tweets Protesters as 'Patriots'... Deletes Amid Controversy
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Ivanka Trump, senior advisor at the White House, sparked controversy by calling the protesters gathered at the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC to protest the election results "patriots." Following the backlash, Ivanka deleted the related tweet.
According to U.S. media outlets such as CNN and The Hill on the 6th (local time), Ivanka Trump, daughter of President Donald Trump and senior advisor, tweeted toward the Trump supporters gathered at the Capitol building, "American patriots ? threatening security or acting disrespectfully against our judicial institutions is unacceptable," adding, "Violence must stop immediately. Please maintain peace."
The tweet was posted alongside a shared message from her father, President Trump, urging the protesters to remain "peaceful," calling for restraint. Prior to Ivanka, President Trump also appealed, "Maintain peace and comply with our Capitol police and law enforcement."
The issue lay in the wording. Online and elsewhere, Ivanka's use of the term "patriots" was criticized. U.S. media questioned, "Are these people (the protesters who stormed the Capitol building) also patriots?"
In response, Ivanka clarified, "No," explaining, "Peaceful protests are patriotic." She added, "Violence is unacceptable and must be strongly condemned." The original controversial tweet has since been deleted.
