'Waterdrop Painter' Kim Chang-yeol Passes Away
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Kim Chang-yeol, a painter famous as the 'Waterdrop Painter,' passed away on the 5th at the age of 92.
Born in 1929 in Maengsan, Pyongannam-do, Kim gained widespread popularity and international fame with his works depicting waterdrops that create an illusion of reality, making a significant mark in the history of contemporary art.
His representative work, the 'Waterdrop Paintings,' was first introduced at the Salon des M?tiers d'Art in Paris, France, in 1972. His works have been traded at high prices at various art fairs and auctions. In March 2016, his 'Waterdrop' (195×123cm, 1973) was sold for 512.82 million KRW at the K Auction Hong Kong auction.
Kim was recognized for his contributions to expanding cultural exchange between France and Korea, receiving the French Order of Arts and Letters Chevalier in 1996. He was awarded the Silver Crown Cultural Medal of the Republic of Korea in 2013 and the French Order of Arts and Letters Officier in 2017.
