View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Tae-min] President-elect Joe Biden promised that if the Democratic Party wins the Georgia Senate runoff election, a new coronavirus relief bill providing $2,000 (2.17 million KRW) per American as disaster relief funds will be swiftly passed.
On the 4th (local time), Biden attended a drive-in campaign rally held in Atlanta, Georgia, urging support for Democratic Senate candidates Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. This day was the day before the Georgia Senate runoff election.
Biden emphasized that to pass the “$2,000 cash payment plan,” which the Republican leadership opposes, in the Senate, the Democrats must become the majority party in the Senate. He said, “The power to pass this bill lies in your hands,” and “Electing the two Democratic candidates will break the deadlock in Washington and America.”
The Democratic-controlled House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved an increase in the additional stimulus package on the 28th to raise the $600 cash payment per person to $2,000, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, ignored it without even holding a vote, resulting in automatic expiration at the end of the session.
Currently, the U.S. Senate has 50 seats held by Republicans and 48 seats held by Democrats including independents. If the Democrats win the two seats in the Georgia runoff election, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who will serve as Senate President, will hold the casting vote, allowing the Democrats to take the lead in legislation and confirmations. The Senate wields strong authority not only over bills and budgets but also in confirmation hearings, so the political landscape of the U.S. will change significantly depending on which party holds the majority. If the Democrats become the majority, President-elect Biden’s reforms can accelerate, but if the Republicans become the majority, they will have strong power to check the Biden administration.
On this day, Biden stressed, “Power is not something politicians claim, seize, or take over,” but “It is only recognized and given by the American people.” This was an indirect criticism of President Trump, who, despite losing several lawsuits after the election, has been pressuring election officials in battleground states to overturn the election results. On the 2nd, President Trump caused a stir by making a pressure call to the Georgia Secretary of State, urging him to “find votes and overturn the election results in Georgia.”
