Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Confirms and Announces the 4th National Port Basic Plan (2021~2030)
Total Investment of 37.1 Trillion Won by 2030
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The government has decided to add a total of 152 berths for cargo and passenger terminals by 2030, increasing cargo handling capacity to 1.6 billion tons.
On the 29th, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced the finalization of the "4th National Port Basic Plan (2021?2030)" which includes such port development and operation plans.
The Port Basic Plan is the highest-level national plan related to ports, established by the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries under the Port Act. It serves as the standard for the development and operation of 31 national trade ports and 29 coastal ports nationwide, and is a spatial plan that efficiently connects ports?which are junctions of maritime and land transportation?with berths, roads, railways, hinterland industries, and cities.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries formulated this basic plan based on the "2030 Port Policy Directions and Implementation Strategies" reported at the Cabinet meeting held on the 17th of last month. By 2030, a total of 152 berths, including 120 cargo berths and 32 passenger berths, will be steadily constructed to expand the cargo handling capacity of national ports from the current 1.26 billion tons to 1.6 billion tons.
To this end, the Ministry plans to invest a total of 37.1 trillion won by 2030, raising 18.7 trillion won from public funds and 18.4 trillion won from private investments.

Kim Myung-jin, Director of the Port Policy Division at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "By steadily implementing the 4th National Port Basic Plan, we will not only smarten and automate ports in line with the 4th Industrial Revolution era, but also create quality jobs to contribute to regional and national economic development, while promoting coexistence between ports and urban spaces."
