Ministry of National Defense "Actively Promoting Condition Assessment for Next Year's Wartime Operational Control Transfer"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] The Ministry of National Defense announced on the 28th that it will actively promote the evaluation of conditions for the transfer of wartime operational control (OPCON) next year.
On the same day, the Ministry of National Defense held the '20-2nd OPCON Transfer Promotion Evaluation Meeting' chaired by Minister of National Defense Seo Wook, and stated that efforts to enhance joint defense leadership capabilities to meet the OPCON transfer conditions early will continue.
It also added that close consultations between South Korea and the United States will be held to conduct the Full Operational Capability (FOC) verification evaluation of the future Combined Forces Command in preparation for the OPCON transfer. South Korea and the U.S. completed the first phase, the Initial Operational Capability (IOC) verification evaluation, last year, and this year, only rehearsals for the FOC verification evaluation were conducted due to the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Minister Seo emphasized at the meeting, "Recognizing that the promotion of OPCON transfer is a core national agenda of our government and an essential task to achieve responsible defense, we will pursue the OPCON transfer tasks more actively and systematically."
