Seocho-gu Installs Smart Motion Sensor Alarms in Child Protection Zones

Installed at Crosswalk in Front of Jamwon-dong Sindong Elementary School Back Gate, High Resident Satisfaction and Operational Effectiveness... Additional Installations Planned Based on Resident Satisfaction Analysis
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seocho-gu (Mayor Eunhee Jo) has introduced the country's first smart motion sensor alarm utilizing AI technology to eliminate safety blind spots within school zones and create a safer walking environment.
The smart motion sensor alarm consists of an LED monitor, cameras, speakers, and a pole. Three AI cameras installed at the top recognize vehicles and pedestrians entering the crosswalk from each direction, alerting vehicle drivers of approaching pedestrians and pedestrians of approaching vehicles through various means such as text on the LED display, voice from the speakers, and flashing lights.
Additionally, the AI cameras distinguish the type of objects entering the crosswalk. The system independently determines whether the object is a car, person, item, or animal, and displays alert messages only when it detects cars or people.
The smart motion sensor alarm originated from the ‘Employee Idea Contest’ held by Seocho-gu earlier this year.
The district adopted an employee idea that could drastically reduce accidents in school zones and improved upon its shortcomings to develop the smart motion sensor alarm.
The original idea was to use motion sensors installed on sidewalks to detect children suddenly running from the sidewalk onto the road and activate warning lights to alert the surroundings. After several meetings between staff and manufacturers, the motion sensors were replaced with AI cameras, and the system was enhanced to display images to both pedestrians and drivers.
On December 11, Seocho-gu installed the smart motion sensor alarm at the crosswalk in front of the back gate of Sindong Elementary School.
There is a wall between the school’s back gate and the one-way street, making it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to recognize each other, and the area was pointed out as having a high risk of accidents.
After installation, a survey was conducted among residents of Jamwon-dong, yielding results that the alarm significantly helps prevent pedestrian traffic accidents.
The district expects the ‘Smart Motion Sensor Alarm’ to greatly contribute to pedestrian safety within school zones. They plan to analyze operational effectiveness and resident satisfaction, investigate areas with high traffic accident risks, and expand installations accordingly.
