Songpa Book Museum Winter Vacation Online Education Program Operation
Providing Online Education for Children to Grow with Books... Offering Enjoyable Museum Experience Opportunities at Home
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su), which operates the Songpa Book Museum, will run an educational program from January 12 to January 22, 2021, that allows preschoolers and elementary school students to participate online during the winter vacation.
The Songpa Book Museum is the first public museum in the country established with the theme of books. It opened on April 23, 2019, ‘World Book Day,’ and has been operating various book culture promotion programs for adults, preschoolers, elementary students, teenagers, and families, including ‘Book Culture Lectures’ for adults, receiving great responses.
This program was prepared so that children, who find it difficult to experience cultural and artistic activities due to COVID-19, can understand book culture at home and have time to communicate with their families.
The education consists of two programs: '[On-Air] Sparkling, Round Books' for families with preschool children and '[On-Air] Come to the Joseon Era Secondhand Bookstore' for families with elementary school students.
Both are conducted live online, and experience kits are sent in advance to enhance the educational effect.
'[On-Air] Sparkling, Round Books' is aimed at 10 children aged 6 to 7, with the goal of ‘making a shining picture book containing our family stories.’ It is an experiential education designed to help children become familiar with shapes (circles) by discovering them in daily life and expressing them through drawings. Families make a desk calendar-type reading lamp together, which also helps them understand bookbinding methods.
'[On-Air] Come to the Joseon Era Secondhand Bookstore' is an education program for 15 children in grades 1 to 4 of elementary school. A secondhand bookstore (세책점, Sechaekjeom) was a store in the late Joseon Dynasty that rented out novels as a business. Participating children perform missions to become new employees of the secondhand bookstore and can understand the book culture of the Joseon era.
Additionally, using the education kit, participants can experience traditional Korean bookbinding methods.

Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, “The response to the online education at the Songpa Book Museum conducted this year was good, so we prepared content for this winter vacation as well,” adding, “Through this program, we hope children will get closer to books and spend more intimate time with their families.”
