Dongshin University Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Occupational Therapy All Pass National Exam 'Hot Topic'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Students at Dongshin University have attracted attention by achieving a 100% pass rate in the national exams for speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists.
According to Dongshin University on the 27th, all 16 fourth-year students in the Department of Speech Therapy recently took the 9th Level 2 Speech-Language Pathologist National Exam and passed.
Additionally, 39 fourth-year students in the Department of Occupational Therapy also achieved a 100% pass rate in the 48th Occupational Therapist National Exam in 2020.
This year, the national average pass rates were 83.6% for speech-language pathologists and 93.3% for occupational therapists.
Throughout the year, despite the overall impossibility of face-to-face classes due to COVID-19, Dongshin University operated a non-face-to-face national exam preparation class, providing online guest lectures, mock exams (5 to 10 times), and past exam question books.
In particular, through after-school learning programs, the university supports foundational studies for majors in the 1st and 2nd years, and in the 3rd and 4th years, it supports advanced major studies, national exam preparation, and certification study groups.
Representative programs include ‘Jultakdongsi (freshmen) · Gyohaksangjang (2nd-3rd years) · Donggodongrak (returning and transfer students)’, where professors engage in various activities with students to assist with career planning and settling into university life; the study group ‘Eokkaedongmu’, which studies common interests together; and the cooperative learning program ‘Gilrajabi’, composed of tutors (teachers) and tutis (learners).
For the Departments of Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy at Dongshin University, the role of the on-campus Integrated Clinical Therapy Center is also very significant.
The Integrated Clinical Therapy Center, boasting the largest scale in Gwangju and Jeonnam, operates the Speech Therapy Center, Occupational Rehabilitation Center, and Play Therapy Center. Here, Dongshin University students develop tailored competencies as speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and play therapists while preparing for national exams and employment.
They enhance understanding of theories that are difficult to grasp through books alone by linking them with practical training, facilitating effective and practical learning.
Additionally, professors fill individual learning gaps through one-on-one personalized guidance.
Kim Sung-tae, head of the Department of Speech Therapy at Dongshin University, said, “I want to express my appreciation to the students who achieved remarkable results despite the very difficult environment and conditions caused by COVID-19,” adding, “We will continue to achieve a 100% national exam pass rate every year and cultivate clinical speech therapy experts differentiated from other universities to improve both the quantity and quality of employment.”

Professor Oh Myung-hwa, who guided the fourth-year students in the Department of Occupational Therapy, said, “Through clinical practice utilizing the Occupational Rehabilitation Center and Dongshin University Korean Medicine Hospital, students’ fieldwork skills have been strengthened, leading to employment success,” and added, “We will spare no support for the students.”
