Italy Also Receives Pfizer... First Batch of Vaccines Arrives
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] Italy is also on the verge of starting vaccinations against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
According to local media, 9,750 doses of the Pfizer vaccine produced in Belgium arrived in Rome, Italy, on the night of the 25th (local time). The vaccine was transported overland for approximately 1,500 km.
The vaccines will be redistributed nationwide within the day with the cooperation of the Ministry of National Defense. The military plans to quickly deliver the vaccines to designated locations using vehicles, transport aircraft, and helicopters.
The first round of vaccinations will target medical staff at hospitals nationwide who are dedicated to treating COVID-19 patients.
Like other European Union (EU) countries such as Germany and France, Italy will begin vaccinations on the 27th.
When additional supplies arrive in 2021, the vaccination target is expected to expand, focusing on the elderly residing in nursing homes.
As of the 25th, Italy reported 19,037 new daily COVID-19 cases and 459 deaths.
