Kim Du-kwan's 'Impeach Yoon' Claim... Opposition: "Is the True Intention to Oust Yoon, or Was It Moon's Security Guarantee?"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] When Kim Du-kwan, a senior member of the ruling party and a lawmaker of the Democratic Party of Korea, called for the impeachment of Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol, opposition party lawmakers immediately criticized him. There were also remarks that the true intention behind the 'Yoon Prosecutor General ousting' is to secure safety after President Moon Jae-in's term ends.
On the 25th, former People Power Party lawmaker Oh Shin-hwan said on Facebook, "The president's message of 'respecting the court's decision' came out just a few hours ago, and it is definitely Moon's lame duck period," expressing this view.
This was a rebuttal to Kim's remarks that "an impeachment motion against Prosecutor General Yoon should be prepared" and "there is no safety guarantee for President Moon without prosecutorial reform."
Former lawmaker Oh said, "Is this saying that no matter what the president says, they will go their own way? They are collectively going crazy," and added, "If possible, go ahead with the impeachment push and reconvene the disciplinary committee."
From the same party, lawmaker Ha Tae-kyung criticized Kim's remarks, saying, "Did the president commit any illegal acts that would send him to prison?" and "The more Democratic Party lawmakers continue to attack Prosecutor General Yoon using the president as an excuse, the more the public cannot help but suspect that the president committed illegal acts that could send him to prison. If he did not commit a crime, what is there to fear from the prosecution?"
He said, "If President Moon Jae-in respects the court's ruling and apologizes for Prosecutor General Yoon's disciplinary action, then Minister of Justice Choo Mi-ae should be dismissed and the Democratic Party should be warned," adding, "If the president apologizes but the ruling party aligned with him says and acts in the opposite way, it is difficult to acknowledge the sincerity of that apology."
Lawmaker Ha also pointed out, "Furthermore, the president should encourage the prosecution to investigate power-related corruption cases such as the Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant and the Ulsan mayoral election interference without any sanctuary," and "If he tolerates the Democratic Party criticizing the investigation of power-related corruption, the public will inevitably suspect that the president is behind the Democratic Party that keeps attacking the prosecution."
Kim Geun-sik, professor at Gyeongnam National University and chairman of the People Power Party's Songpa-byeong district in Seoul, said, "Because of the reckless and ignorant lawmaker Kim, the true intention behind the 'Yoon Prosecutor General ousting' has finally been exposed," and pointed out, "In the end, it is not about prosecutorial reform but solely about securing President Moon's safety after his term ends."
