Gwangyang City to Launch 'Youth Book Purchase Support Project' Again Next Year
Up to 100,000 KRW per Youth: 50% Support for Book Purchase Costs
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Gwangyang City announced that next year it will start the "Cheer Up! Youth Book Purchase Support Project" with a budget of 100 million won, which is 50 million won more than this year.
This project has been implemented since last year in line with Gwangyang City's reading promotion policies and the "Youth Hope Happy Gwangyang" initiative to reduce the financial burden on young people for self-development and job preparation, and to revitalize the local economy and spread reading culture by using local bookstores.
The youth book purchase support provides up to 100,000 won per young person, covering 50% of the book purchase cost (with 50% self-payment). Any citizen aged 18 to 39 residing in Gwangyang can apply, and applications can be made up to twice per person in installments.
However, at least 30% of the purchased books must include books related to employment and certification, and those who applied consecutively last year and this year will be excluded from support next year.
The application process requires signing up as a reading member on the Gwangyang City Library website, then applying for the desired books. After library approval, applicants can receive the books at a selected local bookstore within 7 days.
Since the project started, a total of 1,733 people have received support for 12,057 books. Reflecting the high participation of youth, the city plans to continue the policy aiming for 15% of Gwangyang's youth population to benefit by 2023.
Ko Geun-seong, Director of Library Operations, said, "As the scale of book purchase support has doubled compared to this year, we expect it to provide practical help to many young people," and added, "We thank the local bookstores that share the library's policy vision."
