Changes Caused by Prolonged 'Jipkok' Stay-at-Home... "Increase in Home-Cooked Meals and Double Consumption of Daily Necessities"
Analysis of Tmon Purchase Trends
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] As the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has led to longer hours spent at home, consumption of major food ingredients and daily necessities has more than doubled.
According to data from TMON (CEO Lee Jin-won) comparing purchase data from the two weeks between the 2nd and 16th of this month with the same period last year, there was a notable increase in the purchase of essential food ingredients, confirming a stronger tendency to prepare meals at home compared to last year.
Consumption of convenient foods such as ramen (66%↑) also increased, but the purchase amount of pasta and other noodles (263%↑) showed a higher increase. Purchases of side dishes (122%↑) and greens and vegetables (146%↑) also more than doubled. In the case of rice, products under 10 kg (425%↑) sold well, but the increase in purchase amount for 20 kg products (688%↑) exceeded that. Additionally, reflecting the recent situation where people enjoy coffee and bread at home instead of cafes, purchases of capsule coffee (251%↑) and bakery dough (161%↑) also showed a significant upward trend.
Sales of daily necessities also increased significantly. Sales of bowls and tableware (556%↑), spoon and chopstick sets (72%↑), as well as airtight containers (131%↑) for storing food ingredients and leftovers more than doubled. In daily necessities, spending on essential consumables also clearly increased. Purchases of kitchen detergents (92%↑) and hair products (82%↑) nearly doubled, and purchases of fragrance and deodorizing products also showed growth exceeding double (114%↑).
In response, TMON is holding a 'Daily Necessities Half-Price Sale' event until the 31st. Customers who add products from this event to their shopping cart and purchase them can receive up to a 50% shopping cart discount coupon. Paid membership Super Save members can get up to a 250,000 KRW discount on purchases over 500,000 KRW. General members can use discount coupons up to 30%. All products in the event are offered with free shipping regardless of the amount, and even without using coupons, customers can enjoy budget shopping at the lowest online prices.
