US Democrats Welcome Trump’s $600 Disaster Relief Payment as ‘Embarrassing’
Trump Calls $600 Disaster Relief Payment an Embarrassingly Low Amount
Pelosi: "Since Even the President Agrees, Let's Try Increasing It"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, expressed support for President Donald Trump's proposal to increase disaster relief payments to $2,000 (2.21 million KRW). Although progress was previously blocked due to Republican opposition, now that the president has also expressed support, they are willing to push the proposal forward.
On the 22nd (local time), Speaker Pelosi posted on social media (SNS) a video of President Trump, stating, "The Republicans have opposed the amount of disaster relief payments the president mentioned, but finally the president has come out in support." She added, "The Democrats are ready to accept this proposal and unanimously bring it to the floor this week. Let's do it." This means increasing the disaster relief payment amount by more than three times, as President Trump suggested.
Earlier, President Trump said in a video released on social media, "The stimulus bill is a disgrace. The $600 payment per person is too little. It should be $2,000, and $4,000 for couples." He expressed a negative stance on the disaster relief payment amount in the stimulus package agreed upon by Republicans and Democrats, citing that the payment was too low.
Speaker Pelosi appeared to have been waiting for this statement from President Trump and expressed her willingness to accept it.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of the Democratic Party also expressed the intention to first pass the already agreed stimulus package and then prepare another stimulus plan. He said, "We have been working for months on a plan to provide $2,000 in disaster relief payments to Americans, but the Republicans have opposed it. If President Trump signs the bill to help the people (stimulus package) and the government maintains an open stance on this issue, we will gladly pass additional relief measures that Americans need."
