Seoul Population Experiences Net Outflow for 9 Consecutive Months... 9,486 People Left Last Month Alone
Statistics Korea, Domestic Population Movement Statistics for November 2020
[Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] Last month, Seoul's population decreased by nearly 9,500 people, marking nine consecutive months of net population outflow.
On the 23rd, Statistics Korea released the "Domestic Population Movement Statistics for November 2020," which included this information.
The number of movers in November was 610,000, an increase of 7.9% (44,000 people) compared to the same month last year.
Among the total movers, 68.6% moved within the same province or city, while 31.4% moved between provinces or cities. Compared to the same month last year, intra-provincial moves increased by 8.1%, and inter-provincial moves increased by 7.4%.
The population movement rate, which is the number of movers per 100 people, rose by 1.1 percentage points to 14.5%.
By province or city, net migration (inflow minus outflow) showed net inflows in nine regions including Gyeonggi (11,700 people), Sejong (2,274 people), and Gangwon (937 people). Conversely, eight regions including Seoul (-9,486 people), Daegu (-1,963 people), and Daejeon (-1,568 people) experienced net outflows. Seoul has seen net outflow for nine consecutive months starting from March this year.

The net migration rates by province or city showed net inflows in Sejong (7.9%), Gyeonggi (1.1%), and Gangwon (0.7%), and net outflows in Ulsan (-1.4%), Daejeon (-1.3%), and Seoul (-1.2%).
