View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Joo Ho-young, floor leader of the People Power Party, stated on the 23rd regarding Byun Chang-heum, nominee for Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, “If the appointment of nominee Byun is forcibly carried out, we will have no choice but to proceed with judicial procedures concerning various legal issues revealed during the hearing preparation process,” and “We strongly demand that nominee Byun voluntarily resign or President Moon Jae-in withdraw the nomination.”
At a press conference held at the National Assembly that day, Floor Leader Joo said, “Not only inappropriate conduct and outrageous remarks but also favoritism toward acquaintances, suspicions of false internship by his eldest daughter, and ‘all-in’ apartment purchases (personal flaws) are too numerous to list,” adding, “I hope they do not insult the National Assembly and the people with the calculation that the hearing will be over after just one day.”
Regarding President Moon Jae-in inviting the five key figures including Chief Justice Kim Myung-soo and Constitutional Court Chief Justice Yoo Nam-seok to the Blue House, Floor Leader Joo pointed out, “The president is also a party involved as the Prosecutor General and the Ministry of Justice are in sharp conflict and disciplinary actions have been approved. The constitutional review is a trial in which the Constitutional Court Chief Justice directly participates as a judge,” and “Judicial corruption is nothing else. Calling in the person in charge of the trial by the power of authority to have a conversation and meal itself is the most important aspect of judicial corruption.”
Regarding the additional allegations that 27 people from another camp were irregularly hired by Seongnam City and its affiliated organizations following the suspicion of irregular hiring of seven public library workers who volunteered for Eun Soo-mi, mayor of Seongnam’s election campaign, Floor Leader Joo stated, “We believe there are many similar cases in local governments where the Democratic Party has local government heads, and a full investigation will be launched.”
On the issue of the COVID-19 vaccine, Floor Leader Joo said, “Among 37 OECD countries, South Korea ranks 34th in vaccine procurement, almost at the bottom,” and “The vaccine issue is a matter for the president in all countries worldwide. President Moon cannot just say to secure vaccines; he must personally take responsibility and procure vaccines.”
Floor Leader Joo added, “Examples of leaders shirking responsibility include King Seonjo, who fled to Uiju abandoning his people during the Imjin War, and former President Syngman Rhee, who broadcasted that he would defend Seoul but went south alone,” and “I only hope President Moon does not remain as such an example of leadership regarding vaccine procurement.”
