Assemblyman Lee Byung-hoon: "'Goryeosa' to Proceed with Treasure Designation Process"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Assemblyman Lee Byung-hoon (Democratic Party of Korea·Gwangju Dong-gu Nam-gu Eul) pointed out the need for treasure designation for the "Goryeosa" during the recent national audit, and it is expected to be designated as a treasure soon.
According to Assemblyman Lee on the 23rd, the Cultural Heritage Administration has announced the designation of the "Goryeosa," a key historical material that helps understand the history and culture of the Goryeo Dynasty, after evaluating its value.
The Goryeosa, which has been announced for designation this time, is expected to be designated as a treasure after a 30-day public notice period, during which opinions from various sectors will be collected and reviewed by the Cultural Heritage Committee.
During the recent national audit, Assemblyman Lee pointed out that although the "Goryeosa" is a very important historical material for understanding the Goryeo period, it remains only as a local cultural asset, emphasizing the need to promptly upgrade it to a national treasure.
The "Goryeosa" subject to the designation notice by the Cultural Heritage Administration this time includes the oldest extant Eulhaeja metal movable type edition and the complete woodblock edition among the existing Goryeosa editions.
There are six items in total, held by three institutions: Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at Seoul National University (2 Eulhaeja editions and 2 woodblock editions), Seokdang Museum at Dong-A University (1 woodblock edition), and Yonsei University Library (1 woodblock edition).
The Cultural Heritage Administration, through the Cultural Heritage Committee's review, judged that the Goryeosa, as the official history (Jeongsa) of Goryeo, is the most important primary source for understanding Goryeo history, with outstanding objectivity and reliability of factual information. Furthermore, it was recognized for its excellent historical, cultural, and bibliographical value due to the rich information on Goryeo's culture and institutions. The editions are also highly valued bibliographically as the oldest metal movable type and woodblock reprints passed down to date.
